THE HISTORY

Warta is a city in Sieradz district, one of the oldest in Poland it is situated on the left bank of the Warta river on the 504 km of its stream, in the distance of 15 km from Sieradz. In the document of foundation the city is called Vartha, whereas in the next century it is called as today. The beneficial location on the crossroads of Wielkopolska, Małopolska,Kujawy and Mazowsze was very good for the development of the trade and craft. The period of Warta's splendour is dated between the 14th and 15th century when seven national conventions of nobility with the participation of the King and the parliaments of Sieradz Land were held here. During the first convention the statute of Warta was passed, which modified the law of the land. The fact of granting the high loan for the King Kazimierz Jagiellończyk testifies the position of the town in those days. It was given for the war with the Teutonic Knights, and also the soldiers were sent. In the second half of the 15th century monks from Bernardyn's monastery came to Warta, and later nuns from Bernardyn's convent.

In 1908 the Hospital for Nervously and Mentally Sick People was established, which exists today.
The Jews were a numerous part of the Warta's society among the two World Wars. The World War II and the occupant's politics led to almost complete destruction of them. In April 1940 Hitler's soldiers murdered 499 patients of the local psychatrist hospital. In 1945 Warta had about 2500 citizens and it was only 56% of the population that existed in 1939.
